Maintenance of the yawl Safir

The idea behind the maintenance has been to preserve a safe yacht to sail and to keep her as close as possible to her original construction in relation to as well the rigging as the deck and below deck

Cleaning below water

 line, 1997

During winter 1997 the old layers of paints below waterline was removed. Then the cleaned planks were swabbed with oil and then with primer.

Rubber dinghy and outboard engine 1998

The rubber dinghy and the outboard engine for the dinghy was bought in the summer 1998. It has only been used during our 3 – 4 weeks summer cruise. After use it has been cleaned and stored indoor.

An auto radio with CD player was installed in 1999

New diesel engine 1999

Safir was originally equipped with a Marstal petrol engine of 10 ph. During summer time 1999 the 40 years old engine gave up. In stead we installed a new Yanmar marine diesel engine, 3GM 30, 27 ph. At the same time a new propeller with 3 blades, fitting to the new engine, was mounted.

New Spray hood and cockpit hood 2000

The old spray hood and cockpit hood were replaced by new in spring 2000. The spray hood and the cockpit hood makes the cockpit a comfortable place during rain and wind

Renewal of toilet 2001

The original toilet was renewed by a modern marine toilet.

The ship’s sides, abowe water line were cleaned for old layers of varnish 2001/2002

During the winter 2001 and 2002 the ship’s sides, above water line were cleaned for old layers of varnish. The cleaned planks were stained to underline the colour of the mahogany hull and it was given 7 new layers of varnish.

New genua and cruise foresail 2002

A new genua mounted on a furlex roller and a new cruise foresail mounted on furlex roller was installed in spring 2002. The two new sails on furlex rollers has made it easier to sail her

New compressor for the cold store 2002

The boat was originally equipped with a cold store. Blocks of ice were used to keep the temperature down. In spring 2002 a compressor was mounted. At the same time a third battery was installed to ensure sufficient supply of electricity.

During spring 2004, 4 – 5 layers of planks were renewed with new oak planks in the lowest part of the keel, behind the iron keel. In addition the old iron bolts were replaced with stainless steel bolts.

Winter Storring

During winter Safir is always stored in a dry barn. There is access to electricity for maintenance of the batteries. All the maintenance, varnishing etc. is done before she is put into the sea for a new season. 

The engine

In the autumn when Safir is taken out of the water, the used oil is taken out of the engine. A new oil filter is mounted and new oil poured into the engine. The diesel fuel filter is replaced each second year. Antifreeze is pumped into the water cooling system.

Varnishing

The ship’s sides abow water line, dock house etc. is polished with sandpaper and then varnished with a Sigma yacht varnish.  

Staining

A little drop of mahogany coloured staining is pored into the varnish used in the cockpit, on the fishes, hatches etc.

The cabin top and dock house top is painted with an oil paint with the name: Crème with the mixing code 1212-Y25R 001234

Waterproof spray hood
